The important thing is to just get started! Have a few activities to choose from in case your kids get tired of the first activities. If you're trying to stay busy all day, you'll probably need quite a few different things to do.
Rainy Days and Holidays - Fun Cheap Things to Do with the Kids

Rainy Days and Holidays - Fun Cheap Things to Do with the Kids

What to do when the Kids are Bored. "I'm bored!" There's nothing to do! If you're like me, and you dread those phrases, or, even worse, you loathe the idea of plugging your children into the television or video games all weekend, there are alternatives! I know, I know - who can think up creative ideas when you work all week, either outside of the house, or simply managing the day-to-day flow of dishes, laundry and overall household responsibilities? I'm here to provide that go-to list. Rainy Days and Holidays - Fun, Cheap Things to Do with the Kids

Refer to it as often as needed, whenever the weatherman predicts several days of partly-whiny, with scattered crying episodes...

1. Take a trip to the library.

Its not like you might remember it. Colorful, fun children sections now include personal computers in many public libraries. In addition to books, DVDs and audio tapes are available for check-out. That translates to FREE! Having your child sign up for a library card is a great way to have them learn about responsibility. If you have a school-age reader that is into series books, what a great way to save money! You can often reserve books ahead on-line so that the next one is ready to be picked up as soon as he or she is ready. Check your local library's website to see about story times or other programs.

There are often adult reading groups and other activities that may spark an interest for you, as well. Did I mention free??

2. Play board games.

Anything from checkers to Candy Land can be employed for hours of fun. Older children may learn chess, Clue, Risk, or Monopoly. New games come on the market every year. Chances are that you have at least one of these in your playroom or cupboards. Pull it out, dust it off and read the rules. Scrabble is fun for young readers. You may be able to fudge on the rules a bit and allow for creative words, if necessary. There is a Scrabble, Jr. version, if you want to go shopping in advance of the gloomy days.

3. Get out of the rut.

Pile into the car and choose one of the following places as your destination - you'll be surprised how inexpensive and fun some of these tried and true activities can be.

  • Bowling is a total hit with my kids, and not too hard for anyone age 4 and over. Check to see if there is a non-smoking alley in your area and call another parent to bring their children along. Bring your camera, because you'll get some great photos and laughs watching them perfect their technique!
  • Miniature golf is loads of fun, too. It requires a bit more skill and is recommended for kids ages 6 and older. Younger than that, and they will either get frustrated or bored (or both!). A challenging course with windmills, and clown mouths may take you down memory lane as well.
  • Swimming at the public pool is a fun and inexpensive option for families. Make sure you know the open swim times - they may be limited to certain times in the afternoon. Some facilities have "kiddie" pools that are appropriate for toddlers and other children up to age 6. In either event, if you have young children, you should probably pack your suit so you can get in with them!

4. Get cooking!

Stir up some fun in the kitchen. This is a great way to bond with your children and brush up on some elementary math skills. Don't fall into the gender trap of thinking this is just limited to girls, either. My 10-year old son absolutely loves to try new recipes with me. You can try something as easy as Jello jigglers, or something that requires several steps like cookies.

Your child may also enjoy planning a simple dinner. There are many children cookbooks available - we have several of them - that are both bright and fun. Two of our favorite are: Emeril's "There's a Chef in My Soup" and Rachel Ray's Cooking Rocks! 30-Minute Meals for Kids.

5. Build a fort.

This is so easy, it is criminal. In fact, have your children don their Halloween costumes and pretend they are in the Batcave. First, find a table. Next, pull out some blankets or sheets (not your best ones, of course). Add some old pillows and their imagination, and you've got hours of fun. Variations on this theme include the bunkbed fort, and the fort constructed of sofa cushions and blankets/sheets. If you are lucky enough to live in an area with loads of snow, your children can be outside for hours constructing a snow fort. You can watch from the safe, warm confines of your living room, sipping your coffee.

6. Coloring and crafts.

Go online and pull up a plethora of coloring pages for your child. No need for coloring books. And they are absolutely free! Just make sure you have plenty of ink in your printer. In addition to coloring pages, there are also simple mazes and puzzles for older children to try.

Simple crafts are also easy to plan and create at home. Beading necklaces and bracelets allow for hours of fun. Merely buy an assortment of bead colors and lacing. Have your children sort the beads by color or shape. They can create patterns based on their favorite sports teams, or make friendship bracelets to give to their friends. Some craft stores have workshops specifically for children. If you plan ahead and sign up your kids, they can participate in early sewing, knitting, or painting classes.

7. Get out in the rain anyway.

Put on the boots and the raincoats. Dispense with the umbrellas - they will be worthless within minutes. Grab your dog, if you have one, and just get out there! Go for a walk, examine the sidewalks for earthworms, watch the weather and see what comes up in conversation with your child. They are probably much less apt to care about getting wet than you are! Let them walk through mud puddles.

After you have your fun, come inside for a nice cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows! (Of course, use common sense and stay inside if the temperature is too low, the wind is too high, or there is thunder and lightening!) If the weather is too severe, try sitting with your child on the chair nearest the window and watch the rain coming down. Turn off all the other "noises" in the house (TVs, radios, etc.) Just sit together quietly and listen to nature.

Its just a start, but trust me, by consulting this list and resisting just a bit more before going to the "default" mode of another wasted day in front of the blue tube, you will all be happier and not quite so "soaked." Happy days!
Top 10 Fun Activities for Kids

Top 10 Fun Activities for Kids

Kids love using their imagination in games! I have found my kids most enjoy the simple things in life. Here are the top ten things that my kids love to play with! Incidentally, they never cost me anything extra, they are all natural, quite educational (nothing mass produced or commercial here) and readily available and the best bit - my guys will play with these things FOR HOURS!

The moral here is garbage in and garbage out, meaning that it really is very important what and who your kids play with! Here's some great resources that are stimulating, cheap, natural and build creativity and self esteem!

There's lots of TV-free activities, team building games, brain building toys and heap, heaps more. Check out the lens roll for other related sites that I love. Oh and don't forget to rate this site and fav me if you like it! Have an awesome time, I hope to bring you some great resources in the future!

1. Each Other

Yes, that's right, the best thing I ever did was have more than one child. Everything is just so much more exciting when you play it with someone else and I'm glad I don't always have to be that someone... In fact I believe kids learn more from each other than they do from any adult anywhere!

2. Water

There was a bit of a showdown for Number Two but really nothing beats water. Hot or cold, night or day, rain and shine, boy or girl, old or young - every kid is fascinated with water! In the bath or the shower, at the beach , the lake, the river , the pool or the pond and even in the kitchen sink or puddles at the bottom of the steps...

Water really is a bit of a Grandaddy in this category because when added to other list items it increases the fun exponentially.

3. Blankets

Strange but true... There is nothing like the ultimate cubby house. The joy of creating your own private space out of your favourite soft and cuddly is one rare and unique... Magical blankets in our house have also created instant costuming for all kinds of interesting creatures including worms, snakes, horses and even a sloth!

That's not to mention the menagerie of ghouls, ghosts and other mythical creatures that have haunted our hallways looking suspiciously like my satin bed sheets!

4. Sand

There's something entrancing and soothing about sand. The feeling as it slips through your fingers and toes and is truly relaxing... and then of course it is a very flexible medium, you can build with it, bury yourself and others in it, pour it, sculpt it, make potions by the seaside and bark and grass flavoured cakes in the sandpit at the park! My kids have even used handfuls of sand for ice creams in shopkeeper games. Sand is a powerful toy with excellent 'time killing' potential!

5. Old Boxes

Wow this is such a winner and when combined with the 'miraculous' and much worshiped sticky tape you can really get some housework done! It is by far the least messy of those discussed so far and it fosters a healthy creative imagination... which is really important.

Anything can happen in box world and it's great to get our kids recycling and enjoying caring for our environment. Incidentally, when I first started saving old cartons and containers for craft I realised just how wasteful our family was and it was a great wake up call!! Conserve and recycle people - for the sakes of our children!

6. Their own Bodies!

Not sure what I'm on about with this one? Well what about singing and dancing and performing and skipping and jumping and running and general having a good old wiggle... Gosh it feels good to really get into your body, personally we love kids yoga and even breathing exercises... One day I just sat down with my kids and said let's be animals, let's be shapes, what can you think of and they responded in an instant.

Sometimes we do it with impersonations and sometimes in more quiet way. If I want to help younger kids become aware of their breath I say... "What kind of milkshake you do love the best? Strawberry? Well imagine you have an extra large mega massive strawberry milkshake - you probably need two hands to hold it, now put your lips around the straw and see if you can suck it all up in one big gulp.... Ready go! Now hold it there...

Now imagine you are blowing the worlds biggest balloon and let all that air out again... He he he!" It's lot's of fun!

Oh yes and don't forget the wheelbarrow races and piggybacks and the all time favourite... dun dun TICKLE MONSTER!!!

7. Dirt

Although closely related to sand the experiences are very different - think mud pies! Not to mention digging, planting, growing and discovering the many creatures that inhabit dirt...

What was that song... "Digging in the dirt, to find the places we got hurt." mmm yeah Peter Gabriel. Anyway dirt is a healer, and a soother and I had the greatest pleasure in introducing my one year old to his first 'matchbox cars in the dirt pit' experience the other week... His eyes just lit up as he realized the endless possibilities, car tracks that can be built, changed and erased and then swept away.. Woohoo we love dirt!

8. String

Aaaahhh, string, my four year old son came to me the other day and said (in quite a desperate tone); "Mummy I just really need some string it's all I really want because with string i can do anything!". Well who could refuse such a request?

And sure enough, several hours later he came back to me with tales of how he (as Tarzan)had swung from vines and rescued his Jane from the crocodile infested swamps and then scaled mountains in the freezing snow to conquer the highest mountains in the world. Led his soft lion toy for a walk down the street to visit the neighbours and finally created his latest water saving invention that grows pumpkins twice as fast with half as much water... All or these wonderful possibilities sprang from one piece of yellow twine about 1 metre long...

Whats more string can be used for threading and beading, sewing and braiding and binding and hanging and tying! Get lost in it today - make a spiders web or a new hairstyle, a treasure hunt or freestyle line drawing on canvas.

9. The Stars

The magic and wonder of the sky begins at night... Thanks to the wonderful box office garbage society we live in, all too many children are afraid of the dark... That's why I love to get my kids out under the stars as much as possible to share with them the wonder and the beauty that is only possible to view in a shroud of darkness.

The moon and the planets are also big features and really isn't it awesome to think that our ancestors for millions of year have been staring at these very same burning balls of gas an that this is maybe one of the only things left that we have in common with those forefathers...

10. The Clouds

Many a beautiful day has been spent by our family just lying on the grass (or the trampoline in summer when the ants are out) and staring up at the clouds and picking out shapes and people and animals and castles and giants snatching princesses and dragons breathing fire and fairy princesses having tea parties.... my daughter can even see what kind of fruit juice they are sharing and the filling of the delicate ribbon sandwiches on the plates...

Freaky you might say but this is another great way to kill some time (especially when you are waiting for something, like friends to arrive at the park) and of course it inspires an imagination to run free and reminds children that quiet and still is peaceful! I love our beautiful planet and all of it's precious gifts.
50 Fun Activities for Kids and the Family

50 Fun Activities for Kids and the Family

Kids depend on us for their entertainment. We are their source of learning, skill-building, guidance and we help stimulate their imagination. They entertain us with their first smile, first word and first step. It's our responsibility to nurture their skills with our imaginations. Be clever. Be creative. Be enthusiastic. Most importantly have fun making memories.

Whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or daycare worker it's your responsibility to keep toddlers entertained. Your interaction with the little ones helps to stimulate their development. Raising a child could be costly. The items sold in stores to supposedly "stimulate a child's development" are overpriced.

Back in the day those items didn't exist and the baby boomers seem to be quite successful.

They didn't need Baby Einstein to nurture their imagination. A wooden spoon and a bowl were enough to teach them they were rock star kids. I've researched a list of 50 fun activities, free ideas to entertain toddlers. If you have any additional ones please add them to the comment section for other parents to find useful.

In addition some ideas require that you click on the link for step-by-step instructions or additional details. Have fun making memories with your children.

20 Fun Activities to Do With Toddlers

20 Fun Activities to Do With Toddlers

Playtime helps children develop cognitive skills, master concepts, expressive creativity, and just have fun! If you are needing ideas on how to entertain a toddler, consider these fun activities  to do with toddlers below. These are great for parents, grand-parents, baby-sitters, teachers and more.

Make Scratch 'n Sniff Watercolors

This is a great sensory activity. Try this recipe and let your child paint away! It'll make a great picture to send to the grandparents, aunt/uncle, or a teacher. Talk to him/her about the sense of smell and how each paint smells a little different. You might even find pictures of fruit for the child to color that correspond to the scent.

Plant Seeds

Have some pinto beans in your pantry? Just scoop up some dirt and put it in a disposable cup (or even a real cup), water it, and watch it sprout up over the next few days. Better yet, read Jack and the Beanstalk to go along with the activity. Be sure to talk about what helps plants grow - water, sunlight, etc. You can plant any seeds of course, not just beans.

Write the Child's Name in Whipped Cream

Just grab some wax paper, and some Reddi-Whip Whipped Cream (the kind that you squirt out) and write your child's name. You can also write out other words, print the ABC's, or draw smiley face's, etc. It's a great way for your child to learn letters and it's fun! He/she will enjoy cleaning it up too! Perhaps add some strawberries to cover with the whipped cream - it makes a great dessert!

Go On a Nature Walk

Even in the middle of a big city, you can go on a "nature walk". Point out the clouds, trees, grass, leaves, and be on the look out for birds, squirrels and more. Ask questions, such as "What color is the sky?", and "How many birds do you see?" Try to get the child as involved as possible. It's excellent exercise and educational as well!

Make Edible Play-Dough

If you're up for a mess, this is a wonderful activity! There are a variety of edible or safe-to-eat playdough recipes you can try. Read, "Different Recipes for Homemade Edible Playdough" for suggestions.

Create Peanut Butter Marshmallow Beards

This should create some laughter and leave lots of memories! It's a great photo moment too! Let your child wear peanut-butter marshmallow beards - just slather on the peanut butter, add the marshmallows and enjoy!

Make homemade Finger Paints

Finger-painting is one of the highlights of childhood! If you don't feel like stirring up something, store bought finger paints are just as good. Or, you could just use pudding!

Go to the Library

Your tax dollars support the public library system, take advantage of it! Most libraries, even in small towns, offer story time for toddlers and above. Reading to your child not only stimulates his/her cognitive skills and tickles their creativity, it increases their vocabulary and can be fun!

Create an Indoor Playhouse Out of Blankets

This is one of my toddler's favorite activities! Also known as a "tent" or "fort", an indoor playhouse made out of blankets is a very amusing activity. Just line up chairs, table, couch, etc. and cover it with blankets and they'll love playing in their own little private playhouse! It's also a great time to play peek-a-boo.

Make Music Shakers

This one might get a little annoying after awhile, but it'll be fun for your kiddo! Just take some disposable paper plates and beans. Put the beans in between the paper plates and staple them together. Let the children decorate the shakers with colors or magic markers. He/she will enjoy shaking their new instruments! Perhaps encourage your children to shake along to songs from a CD.

Go to a Pet Shop

A pet shop can be just as exciting as the zoo for a toddler! Try to locate a pet shop in your area with dogs, fish, snakes, gerbils, and more. He/she will love watching the animals. Ask questions such as "What color is the bird?", etc. It's a fun outing! Try to buy something (such as a small doggie treat if you have a dog) from the store if you spend awhile there.

Make a Collage Together

Do you have a lot of old magazines lying around? Some toddlers love to glue things on paper. Just flip through the magazines and cut out pictures of animals, kids, flowers, etc, and encourage your tot to glue (with a glue stick) the pictures on a sheet. Perhaps try to create themed collages like "food" and "smiles". It's an excellent way to help your children learn to categorize, and it'll keep them busy for a few moments or so. In the fall, you can also collect leaves outside to create a nature-themed collage.

Make a Hand Print or Foot Print Memento

Most cities and larger towns have at least one paint-your-own pottery studio. This is a great place to make hand print or foot print mementos such as as plates, bowls, coffee mugs, etc. You can take your child there, and they'll even help you press your child's hand down and will decorate it for you if you want. To find a studio in your area, just google your town's name and "pottery studio" or "paint your own pottery". You might also look on www.paintyourownpottery.net, however not all businesses are listed. You could also create something at home - or order a kit online to make a hand print mold.

Decorate Your Driveway or Sidewalk with Chalk

If you've got a little picasso on your hands, this is a fun activity that should entertain them for at least 15 minutes or so. Just purchase sidewalk chalk - or even regular chalk - and let their imaginations go wild. It's a unique way to encourage them to express themselves and they'll love showing off their artwork. Just wait till it rains and it'll clean up on it's on, or you can hose down the drawings with a water hose. (Perhaps take pictures before you erase them!)

Make Sock Puppets

This one is sure to bring on a little bit of laughter. Glue eyes and a nose to old socks and you've got a perfect little puppet! You can purchase craft eyes, or just create some your of own out of construction paper. Just to warn you - your toddler might end up taking his socks often afterwards to make sock puppets again and again!

Make Bird Seed Feeders

Create birdseed feeders using pine cones and peanut butter! Just tie or super glue a string to a pine cone. Roll the pine cone in peanut butter and pour bird seed over it - voila!- you've got a great bird feeder! Hang them in your backyard and wait for the birds to enjoy them! Your child will love looking for the birds. This is a wonderful activity to do outside, so you won't have to sweep up a lot of bird seed.

Make a Card for the Grandparents, Aunt/Uncle, Teacher or a Friend

If a Holiday/Birthday is coming up, or even if it's not, help your child create a card for Grandma/Grandpa, an Aunt or whoever. Let him/her color/draw pictures on the card, use rubber stamps (can be purchased at Wal-Mart or a craft store), glue pictures, or stick stickers on it. He/she might feel very proud of his/her little artwork.

Feed the Ducks

If you live anywhere near a pond/lake with ducks, stop by and feed the ducks! Bring old bread - or even new - it's worth the cost of the loaf of bread for the entertainment. Just be careful, as some toddlers have a habit of throwing an entire piece of bread to the ducks - which, of course, they love!

Play with a Flashlight in a Closet

This is my little boy's favorite. I cleaned out a closet recently and his new past time is to get in the "cave" with a flashlight. Try it with your little one! Flashlights are always a big hit among toddlers.

Play Dress Up

Yes, even little boys will enjoy this fun activity! Have a variety of shirts, hats, boots, sunglasses, dresses (for girls) and more for the children to dress in. You might visit a second hand store or search on eBay for some fun items.

Happy Playing! Enjoy!
Christmas Activities to Enjoy with the Children You Love

Christmas Activities to Enjoy with the Children You Love

You certainly should be! It's that time of year that we should be preparing for what any kid would call the greatest holiday of the year! More important than gifts is Christmas spirit. It's what brings that warm feeling of love and friendship into our homes and atmosphere this time of year.

Our children are always ready to partake in this time of love and togetherness, but it is up to us to instill that Christmas spirit of holiday fun. It is my mission every year, to make each Christmas a memorable one for my kids, and here are some of the fun activities / traditions that we partake in every year, as a family.

These Christmas Activities really bring my family closer for the holiday season, and I am sure they will do the same for you!

The Elf on the Shelf

"The Elf on the Shelf" tradition began with a children's book from 2005. Basically, it is a book that comes with an elf doll. It's actually a somewhat high profile thing, as you can actually register your elf and it will show up on the database and portray your elf's name and location.

The general idea is that the elf shows up the day after thanksgiving (that can be flexible) and your family gives the elf a name which in turn brings the elf to life giving it "Christmas magic". Though the elf will never act like a toy when someone is watching it. The elf's job is to monitor the children by day, and travel to the North Pole by night to report that behavior to Santa. Every now and then, you or your kids will notice that the elf has moved a little or changed positions. If you want to stick to the storyline, the elf is not suppose to be touched because this may cause him / her to loose their power. On Christmas Eve, "elf" returns to the North Pole with their job being fulfilled and does not return until the Christmas season of next year.

Our own version is a little more fun to me. We didn't even buy the true "Elf on a shelf". We just bought a somewhat cheap, stuffed, elf doll and used a variation of this same idea. My kids named him "Twinkle", and we allow them to hold him and play with him and even take turns using him for a "stuffy" at bed time. When they're fast asleep, we sneak in and move Twinkle somewhere else.

Sometimes, Twinkle has a tenancy to pull a harmless practical joke due to his slightly mischievous nature (tho we are careful not to endorse bad behavior). So every morning when the kids wake up, they are on a mission to find their elf friend who didn't return to bed with them after his visit with Santa at the North Pole. Often times, during their search, they may find he's made a bit of a mess, or done something mischievous like decorating the tree with everyone's socks.

Twinkle also has the tenancy to leave a note, sending the kids on a mission of good will. For instance they may find him holding a note that says, "Please give 5 people a nice compliment today!", or "It would be very nice if you picked a toy you don't play with anymore, and give it to someone who will love it!". The kids love this tradition, and it is a great activity for the whole family that endorses love, kindness, and brings much joy and laughter!

Family Christmas Movies Nights

What kid doesn't like great Christmas movies? For that matter, what adult doesn't like at least a few of them. There is no clear cut time or schedule for this in my house (though a schedule would not be bad). We take turns picking Christmas movies to watch, as well as catching television broadcasts of Christmas shows like Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, ect. Believe it or not, this actually creates great interaction between parents and children as well, because these movies are meant for kids to pick up on the underlying moral of the story, so they proceed to discuss what's going on and ask questions of their parents who they think "know everything". It's a great tool for drawing kids in to a teaching point of morality, while being great fun at the same time!

Feed Santa's Friends and Help Them Spot Your Home

Don't we always leave Santa some milk and cookies? Well his reindeer are working pretty hard too, so they might be hungry as well! Also, it's pretty dark, looking down from the night sky, so maybe we can help Santa and the reindeer spot our house. We remedy both of these problems for our kids by letting them make reindeer food. It's very simple and cheap to make, so any child can get involved in the process!

You need a large freezer bag, oatmeal, sugar, and glitter (or colored sugar crystals, as some worry that glitter may be "bad for the birds"). There are lots of ways to make "reindeer food", but we use these ingredients because they are very inexpensive and what the reindeer don't eat is quickly devoured by birds and insects.

Take your kids out just before dark, on Christmas Eve, and let them spread the reindeer food across the lawn. Don't pile it up though. Make sure it's spread nicely so you can sell that some of it has been eaten the next morning. The reindeer will spot the sparkling food from the sky making Santa's job easier, and while the jolly ole fat man is sliding down the chimney, the reindeer will be enjoying a gourmet dinner.

This idea originates from the childrens book, "Reindeer Magic". If you'd like to make it more, "like magic" or simply don't want the mess in your kitchen, consider purchasing a bag of, already prepared, reindeer food which comes in the same bag described in the story book. Then your kids will believe it's magic because "Santa" sent it. If they have the book to go with it, that's even better!

Story Time

Some old fashioned traditions just never die, and there is a reason for that. Children love for their parents to read them a good, old fashioned, bed-time story! It's irreplaceable bonding time, and children will go through their whole life, keeping those times as a fond memory. It's a good idea year around, but at Christmas time, it serves as a great advocate for Christmas Spirit!
