Homemade Fingerpaint

We're feeling a bit under the weather at the Adams house today, so I thought I would share our recipe for fingerpaint instead of a craft. Hopefully everyone will be feeling well again soon so that we can share a few fall projects!

Ingredients:
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
cold water
1/2 cup cornstarch
4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid
food coloring
4 to 6 wide mouth jars

Directions:
1. Stir the gelatin into 1/3 cup cold water; set aside.
2. Measure the cornstarch into a saucepan and stir in 2 1/2 cups cold water until dissolved.
3.Bring the mixture to a simmer and stir until thickened.
4.Remove the pan from the heat and blend in the gelatin mixture and the dishwashing liquid.
5. Allow the mixture to cool and spoon it into jars.
6.Stir in a generous amount of food coloring.
7. Store at room temperature in airtight containers.
D.I.Y- super quick & super easy bedside table makeover

D.I.Y- super quick & super easy bedside table makeover

The quickest little up-cycle job for a spare moment...really!

Now, I have to admit for this little bit of house loving & up-cycling, I originally thought you needed a very cool, simple, vintage piece to start with...which I did happen to stumble upon {!!}...but in hindsight, I actually think you could do this to any little sidey-table piece and it would look a fab!

I dropped a few bags off to our local *Vinnies*...(Oxfam, Red Cross) and thought I'd have a quick lookie in the furniture area, as they had just had a huge delivery of stuff!

I'm always on the lookout for small tables...anything that can be glammed up a bit, and plonked next to a sofa or chair, bed or bath tub!
This was just off the truck, with a wonderful solid piece of glass on top, and a lovely old-holiday-house-by-the-ocean-shape to it.

The lovely old guys hauling from the trucks out the back gave me a grin, and told me to take it, and love it...for a fiver!

Five bucks!

Done!

I took, and loved, and scrubbed, and painted!

Rust-Oleum. I love you.

Our Miss.Audrey wanted to have a mini-room makeover before her 9th birthday.
A bit of a not-so-many-little-kid-things-kinda-clean-out.
This was the perfect bed side table to get *that very specific 8 turning 9 year old look*! ;-)

OK- there's a thing about my kids rooms...they belong to my kids.
So, although I have a bit of a say in the bigger picture stuff, the feel of each of the three kids rooms is very much their own.
I love that!
It does allow me though, to indulge other styling indulgences using colourful pieces I wouldn't otherwise live with in the family spaces.

Thank god for little people under our roof.
I love a good 'pantone feeling rainbow pom-pom garland' as much as the next creative- I just couldn't live with it in the kitchen for nearly as long as I can love it in Audrey's room!

PS- how flipping cute is this letter, *typed* on a vintage typewriter with teeny fingers, when she was 7!
PPS- excuse the pickies- it was iPhone all the way with these!

Happy Up-cycling!

Cool Ten-Minute D.I.Y Artwork

Cool Ten-Minute D.I.Y Artwork

A quick...cool...fab looking D.I.Y for any room!

We are on the edge of leaping into the renovating pit...well an awesome big extension I hope!
And the house is being cleared of any *extra* stuff that apparently we can live without...hmmm!?

Can I really live without *stuff*?
This will be the making, or perhaps the undoing, of my Bower Bird ways.

We'll see.
So far I'm loving the empty walls.
But I'm keeping one feature wall of *stuff* above the sofa's. {I can't do total cold turkey decorating...}

You know empty walls reflect sooooooo much lovely light!
Yeah so did I...but I've been choosing to ignore that!
I'm loving that light!

Anyway...

As the sitting room and kitchen are starting to be stripped bare- I'm sorting all the bedrooms so the kids can spend more time in there, doing things they may have done at the dining table or kitchen bench- seeing as we'll be a few months without either.

We spent a very wet Sydney weekend re-aranging rooms, and completing quick little cool projects we'd been putting aside with the warm winter weather.
A weekend inside was just what we needed to do all our pre-reno *jobs*, and the rain sorted that!

So...

Here's a D.I.Y that takes little time for lotsa punch!

A graphic print like artwork- two seconds with a spray can and a quick break in the weather!

What you need: D.I.Y Artwork

-Ikea frame - we used a poster sized frame from the NYTTJA range in black.

-Spray paint in black- we used Rust-Oleum in Canyon Black as we had a stash in the shed.

-Large sheet of paper- torn slightly smaller that the size of your chosen frame.
 We use sheets from the MALA  roll of kids paper, again from IKEA.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simply unwrap the frame, and use the sheet of paper in the frame, to measure your *torn off sheet* of artwork paper from the MALA roll.
In an open area, spray a huge heart, or shape of your choice, onto the MALA paper and leave to dry.
Attach the artwork to the white side of the paper that came in the NYTTJA frame.
Put the frame back together. Bung a nail in the wall. And hang.
D.O.N.E
Happy D.I.Y-ing on a shoestring budget with no time!
This one is lotsa bang for your buck
&
as individual as you choose to make it!
The options are endless...
how to make french tote from an eco bag
styling a supermarket eco bag into a gorgeous french-looking market tote...
an eco bag with good bones...a strong handle & lovely shape & size...
i am not a plastic bag person by any stretch of the imagination...
i can't stand to use them at the supermarket...i can't stand the kids to pack anything in them & take
them to school...i can't stand that they have holes in the bottom of most & therefore cannot be
justified even as bin liners...
so we just don't use them!
with all my experience of eco-bags...this one is a particularly great one!
so...
tote ready- any labels removed with a cotton picker or pair of scissors...
simple...
i have raved about these french letter stencils before- when i stencilled steel buckets {here}
& when i stencilled a vintage ladder from our village in England {here}
i have always wanted to stencil a tote-& as my sewing machine is still in transit- enjoying the
sea air on it's voyage to Australia- i am using what i have to make what i want need...
i like to tape my number stencils to newspaper & then to the object so that there are
no *gaps* which may end up slightly black anywhere else...
i also lined this tote with newspaper as i wasn't sure how the spray would seep through the weave...
& yep i used *fiddly bits* spray paint again that you can find {here}
instant frenchy-looking tote -made on a whim- with what i had at home...
Get ya Easter Craft On- Day 2
Get ya Easter Craft On- Day 2
Everyone needs a Floral Easter crown...
This Easter craft is super quick...and CRAZY cute, once you have all your *bits* together.
We are making this at Audrey's 9th Birthday with her *bestie gang* from school.
I'm going to have each place sorted, and set up with all they'll each need to make their own.
I can't wait to see how they put their's together...undoubtedly I'll be sitting on my *helping hands*!!
I'll be thinking balance and they'll be thinking *go-for-it-fun*!
The girls sweet-as crowns will have a creative energy, that as party-planner,  mine will not!
What you need:
-fabric flowers...all sorts, go as simple or indulgent as you like!
-craft wire for the actual head piece {I found some in our fabric store covered in soft white fluff stuff!}
-garden ties
What to do- building that crown!
-remove all the fabric flower heads from their stems, leaving a small green end to tie onto the crown keeping the flower in firmly in place.
-measure your craft wire for the head to be crowned...
-cut to size and join so all the sharp ends are covered and tied. Lay on the table with all your inspiration {flowers, vine leaves...etc etc}
-using the green garden ties, firstly tie your vine leaves as the base and build up using your larger then smaller flowers to fill the spaces in between.
-be sure to tuck all the garden tie ends in upon themselves, so there are no sharp ends!
Put on head in your dressing gown...giggle and enjoy!
This is one of the simples, prettiest easter/birthday crafts we've done.
It's super inexpensive and almost built from what you may already have around your home!
Enjoy!
